Bold, Courageous and Smart

Resetting the priority for Hydro Tasmania has the potential to be a game-changer for every Tasmanian and for those considering becoming Tasmanians by investing in new energy-related businesses in this state.

To date, most of the appeasements offered by all political parties to take away some of the power price pain have been short-term and avoid going to the heart of the problem. Near-term relief is, welcome but unless the state does something else, paying out rebates or price capping will become unsustainable within a few years.

The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) has long queried why have Tasmanians been slugged with the price penalties of a dysfunctional National Energy Market.

Ray Mostogl, CEO of TMEC said, “Tasmania is the only state left in the country that can make this move – we should all be thankful Hydro Tasmania was not privatised – because this would not have been an option.”

“Like all businesses, Hydro Tasmania has to navigate the multiple demands it faces but if we had the current Ministerial Charter include lowest electricity prices and creating jobs – it is highly unlikely we would be saying there is no electricity available for new proponents.”

The minerals and manufacturing sector consistently accounts for over 60 percent of the state’s exports, it also consumes more than 50 percent of the states electricity, therefore this policy is welcomed by the industry.

The best feature of the policy is all Tasmanian residents and businesses will benefit from this change. The new Hydro Tasmania will once again be here for all Tasmanians.
